Mrs. Shado has a tree called dton khae/don kae, it has flowers called dawk khae/dok kae that, depending on the variety can be white, pink or red. The flowers are edible and this evening she made แกงส้มกุ้งใส่ดอกแค (gaeng sohm goong sai dawk khae) sour curry with shrimp and dawk khae flowers. When cooked the flowers turn purple. The primary flavors are chilis, tamarind and palm sugar. It's spicy. Right now the tree is very prolific and Mrs. S is giving flowers away by the sack full. A tasty departure from the usual from the Thai/Isaan curries.

This curry is often served with khai cha om (ไข่ชะอม) = acacia omelet. I'm not a big fan of cha om so usually pass on that. The missus loads up on the stuff however. One of her favorites.
